Keratin vs Protein vs Brazilian Treatment

Three of the most common questions we get at the hair desk at Dashe involve treatments that get talked about as if they are the same thing. Keratin treatment. Brazilian blowout. Protein treatment. They are not the same thing. They do different things to the hair, they last different amounts of time, and they are suited to different hair conditions.

Choosing the wrong one wastes money. Worse, it can leave hair feeling heavier, drier, or more damaged than it was when you walked in. This is a clear breakdown of what each treatment actually is, written by the hair team at Dashe Beauty in Yarmouk.

Keratin treatment

A keratin treatment is a smoothing service that fills the hair shaft with a keratin protein solution and seals it in place using heat. The result is hair that looks smoother, lies flatter, and is significantly less prone to frizz. It does not chemically alter the hair structure the way relaxers do, which is why keratin is described as a smoothing treatment rather than a straightening one.

The treatment is best suited to hair that is wavy, frizzy, or curly and that the client wants to wear smoother and easier to manage. It is not designed to create poker-straight hair, although it does reduce volume and curl significantly. Clients with naturally straight hair rarely benefit from a keratin treatment because there is little frizz to control.

A keratin treatment lasts between three and five months depending on hair type, washing routine, and the specific products used. It works best when paired with a sulphate-free shampoo afterwards, because sulphates strip the treatment out faster.

The session takes between two and four hours depending on hair length and density. The hair is washed, the keratin solution is applied section by section, then sealed with a flat iron at high temperature. The smell of the solution can be noticeable. After the treatment, the hair should not be washed or tied up for the first 48 to 72 hours, depending on the formula.

Brazilian blowout

The term Brazilian blowout originally referred to a specific brand and formula, but it is now used more loosely to describe a category of smoothing treatments developed in Brazil. The chemistry is similar to keratin but the formulas are typically stronger and the smoothing effect is more dramatic.

Where keratin softens curl and reduces frizz, a Brazilian blowout will often deliver much closer to fully straight hair, even on quite curly hair types. The trade-off is that the formulas are more chemically intense, the longevity can be slightly shorter than a high-quality keratin treatment, and the recovery rules are stricter.

Brazilian blowouts are best for clients who want a more dramatic smoothing effect than keratin can provide and whose hair can handle a stronger chemical process. We do not recommend them for already-damaged or over-processed hair.

Protein treatment

This is the one that gets confused with the other two most often, even though it does something completely different. A protein treatment is not a smoothing service. It is a repair treatment.

Hair that has been coloured, bleached, heat-styled heavily, or chemically treated loses protein over time. The cuticle becomes weaker, the strand becomes more porous, and breakage increases. A protein treatment delivers small protein molecules deep into the hair shaft to temporarily replace what has been lost. The result is hair that feels stronger, less brittle, and less prone to snapping.

Protein treatments are best suited to clients with damaged, bleached, or over-processed hair who need to rebuild strength. They are not suited to clients with already-strong, healthy hair, because too much protein on healthy hair can have the opposite effect, making the hair feel stiff and brittle, a condition called protein overload.

The session is shorter than keratin or Brazilian, usually 60 to 90 minutes, and the result lasts between four and eight weeks. Most clients who need protein treatments need them as a regular part of a hair-care routine, not as a one-off.

How to choose

If your hair is curly or frizzy and you want it to lie smoother and be easier to manage day to day: keratin.

If your hair is curly and you want a more dramatic, closer-to-straight result and your hair is healthy enough to handle a stronger formula: Brazilian.

If your hair is damaged, breaking, brittle, or over-processed: protein. None of the smoothing treatments will fix damaged hair. A protein treatment will.

A common mistake is to ask for a keratin treatment when what the hair actually needs is a protein treatment. Smoothing damaged hair without first repairing it can make breakage worse. This is why the consultation matters. At Dashe, every smoothing or repair appointment begins with a hair assessment, where we look at the porosity, elasticity, and condition of the hair before recommending which treatment is appropriate. Sometimes the recommendation is to do a course of protein treatments first and only schedule the smoothing service three or four weeks later.
