Post-Treatment Skincare: What to Do Next

Redken All Soft Argan 6 Hair Oil

You just had a professional skin treatment. Your skin looks great right now. What you do in the next 48 to 72 hours will determine whether those results hold, improve, or get undone by the wrong product at the wrong time.

Post-treatment skincare is not complicated, but it is specific. Different treatments leave the skin in different states of sensitivity, and the aftercare needs to match. Here is a practical guide from the skincare team at Dashe Beauty, covering the three most common treatment categories we perform.

After a HydraFacial or deep-cleansing facial

A HydraFacial or deep facial leaves the skin clean, exfoliated, and freshly infused with active serums. The pores are open and the skin barrier is slightly more permeable than usual. This is good because products absorb better, but it also means the skin is more reactive to irritants.

For the first 24 hours: use only a gentle cleanser, a hydrating serum (hyaluronic acid is ideal), and a simple moisturiser. Avoid retinol, vitamin C in high concentrations, AHA or BHA exfoliants, and any product with fragrance. Your skin does not need active ingredients right now. It needs calm hydration.

Sunscreen is non-negotiable from day one. SPF 50, reapplied every two hours if you are outdoors. The freshly exfoliated skin is more vulnerable to UV damage, and sun exposure after a facial can cause hyperpigmentation, especially on darker skin tones.

After a chemical peel

Chemical peels range from superficial (light tingling, minimal downtime) to medium-depth (visible peeling for several days). The aftercare scales with the intensity of the peel.

For a light peel: the skin may feel slightly tight and look pink for a day or two. Use a gentle cleanser, a barrier-repair moisturiser (look for ceramides and niacinamide), and high-SPF sunscreen. Do not pick at any flaking skin. Let it shed naturally.

For a medium peel: expect visible peeling for three to seven days. During this time, keep the skin hydrated constantly. Apply a healing balm or thick moisturiser several times a day. Do not use any active ingredients until the peeling has completely stopped and the new skin underneath feels smooth and settled. No makeup for at least 48 hours, longer if the skin is still raw.

Avoid direct sun exposure as much as possible for two weeks after a peel. The new skin is significantly more photosensitive.

After laser or microneedling

These treatments create controlled micro-injuries in the skin to trigger a healing response. The skin will be red, possibly swollen, and feels similar to a mild sunburn for one to three days.

For the first 48 hours: cleanse very gently with lukewarm water and a mild cleanser. Apply a calming serum (centella asiatica or aloe-based), followed by a thick, occlusive moisturiser to lock in hydration and protect the healing skin. Do not touch your face unnecessarily. Do not apply makeup. Do not use any active ingredients.

From day three onward, you can gradually reintroduce your normal products, one at a time, starting with the gentlest. Retinol and acids should wait at least seven to ten days, or until your skin feels completely normal again.

General rules that apply after any treatment

Do not go to the gym or sauna for 24 hours. Sweating on freshly treated skin can cause irritation and breakouts. Do not swim in chlorinated or salt water for 48 hours. Avoid touching or picking the treated area. Keep your pillowcase clean; change it the night of the treatment.

If you are unsure about a specific product, do not use it. When in doubt, less is more. Gentle cleanser, hydrating serum, moisturiser, sunscreen. That is your post-treatment formula until the skin settles.
