Magnetic Lashes vs Extensions vs Lift
Three different services. Three very different commitments. The question we hear most often at the brow and lash bar at Dashe is some version of: which one is right for me. The honest answer depends less on how your lashes currently look and more on how much daily routine you want, how often you can come back for maintenance, and what you do with your face during the day.
Here is an unhurried explanation of all three, written by the lash team that performs them every day at Dashe Beauty in Yarmouk.
Magnetic lashes
These are reusable strip lashes that attach to the natural lash line using a magnetic eyeliner. You apply a thin line of the special liner along your lash line, wait for it to dry slightly, then place the magnetic lash strip on top. The lash and the eyeliner snap together because both contain tiny magnetic particles.
Magnetic lashes are the lowest-commitment option of the three. There is no salon visit required for the daily application. You buy a set, you apply them at home in about a minute, and you remove them at the end of the day. A good set can be worn dozens of times before the band loses its shape.
They suit clients who want occasional drama for events, who do not want the maintenance of extensions, and who are not comfortable with another person working close to their eyes for an hour. They do not suit clients who want a permanent everyday look or who want to wake up with lashes already in place.
The downside is that strip lashes always look like strip lashes. Even the best ones have a visible band at the lash line that needs to be hidden with eyeliner. They are also unsuitable for sleeping in or for swimming.
Lash extensions
Lash extensions are individual synthetic or silk lashes glued one by one to your natural lashes by a trained technician. The process takes between 90 minutes and two and a half hours for a full set, depending on whether you choose classic, hybrid, or volume.
Classic extensions are one extension per natural lash. Hybrid is a mix of classic and small fans. Volume is multiple ultra-fine lashes hand-fanned and applied to a single natural lash for a much fuller effect. The right choice depends on the density of your natural lashes and the look you want. We always do a short consultation at the start of the appointment to decide together.
Extensions last between three and four weeks before they need to be infilled. Maintenance appointments take about an hour and are needed every two to three weeks to keep the look consistent as natural lashes shed. With proper care, extensions never need a complete removal.
They suit clients who want to wake up with lashes already in place, who do not wear mascara, and who can commit to the maintenance schedule. They do not suit clients who rub their eyes constantly, who use oil-based makeup removers, or who cannot make it back to the salon every few weeks.
When done well, extensions look natural enough that strangers will not realise they are extensions. When done badly, they look heavy, clumpy, and damage the natural lash. The technician matters more than almost any other factor.
Lash lift
A lash lift is a chemical treatment that curls and lifts your own natural lashes, holding the curl in place for six to eight weeks. There are no extensions added. The treatment uses a small silicone shield placed against the eyelid, your natural lashes are pressed onto the shield, and a lifting solution is applied to set them in the curled position. A tint is usually added at the end to darken the lashes for extra impact.
The result is your own lashes, curled upward and looking longer because they are no longer pointing straight out or down. There is no daily maintenance, nothing to apply, nothing to remove.
A lash lift suits clients who already have decent natural lash length but find that their lashes point downward, who do not want the cost or maintenance of extensions, and who want something that looks like nothing more than well-curled mascara without the mascara. It does not suit clients who have very short or very sparse natural lashes, because there is nothing to add, and the lift only works with what is already there.
The treatment takes about an hour. You should avoid getting the lashes wet for 24 hours afterwards, and avoid oil-based products around the eye for the duration of the lift.
How to decide
If you want the lowest cost and lowest commitment, and you only want lashes for occasional events: magnetic.
If you want to wake up with lashes every day and you can commit to maintenance: extensions.
If you have decent natural lashes but they point the wrong way, and you want a treatment that looks effortless: lash lift.
