Curly Hair Care in Kuwait: Full Routine
Curly hair in Kuwait has its own particular set of problems. The climate is dry for most of the year, then humid for the months it is not. The air conditioning runs almost constantly indoors, which strips moisture out of the air. The water is hard. The sun is strong. None of this is friendly to a curl pattern that depends on consistent hydration to look and behave well.
Most curly clients we see at Dashe Beauty in Yarmouk arrive having tried a long list of products that promised to fix their hair and did not. The truth is that products alone rarely solve the problem. The cut, the routine, and an honest understanding of what curl patterns need are what make the difference. This is what we tell clients in their first consultation at our curly hair desk.
The Kuwait climate problem
Curly hair is structurally drier than straight hair. The cuticles do not lie flat, which means natural scalp oils struggle to travel down the strand the way they do on straighter hair types. This is why curly hair is almost always thirstier than its owner realises.
In Kuwait, three things make this worse. The first is humidity swings. When the air outside is dry and the air conditioning indoors is dry, the hair loses moisture quickly. When the humidity rises in summer, the hair grabs whatever moisture is in the air and frizzes as it expands. Either extreme is bad for curls.
The second is the water. Kuwait’s tap water is hard, meaning it contains a high level of dissolved minerals. Hard water builds up on the hair shaft over time, leaving it feeling rough, looking dull, and resisting both moisture and product penetration. Most curly clients in Kuwait benefit from a clarifying treatment every few weeks specifically to remove this build-up.
The third is the sun. UV exposure damages the proteins in the hair, weakens the cuticle, and accelerates colour fading. Curly hair is particularly vulnerable because the curl pattern means more surface area exposed to the sun than straight hair lying flat.
The cut matters more than the products
Most curl problems we see at Dashe are cut problems, not product problems. A curly cut is not a straight cut performed on curly hair. It is a different technique. The curls need to be shaped while they are dry and in their natural pattern, because cutting curly hair wet hides what the curl actually does and where the weight will sit once it dries.
A proper curly cut respects the natural curl pattern of each section, removes weight in places that allow the curls to spring properly, and avoids creating heavy lines that flatten the shape. Done well, the cut alone often eliminates 60 to 70 percent of the frizz the client thought was caused by their products.
This is why we always cut curly hair dry at Dashe. The hair is washed, conditioned, styled in its natural pattern, allowed to dry, and only then cut. The session takes longer than a regular cut, but the result is the difference between curls that fall into shape on their own and curls that fight you every morning.
The basic routine for Kuwait curls
A working routine for curly hair in Kuwait does not need to be complicated. Five steps is enough.
First, a sulphate-free shampoo no more than twice a week. Sulphates strip natural oils, which dries curly hair faster than it can recover. Co-washing (using a conditioner instead of shampoo) on the in-between days keeps the hair clean without drying it out.
Second, a deep conditioning mask once a week. Curly hair drinks moisture and needs a regular deep dose to stay hydrated. The mask should sit on the hair for at least 15 minutes under a warm towel or shower cap.
Third, a leave-in conditioner applied to soaking wet hair, never towel-dried hair. Curls hold their shape best when product is applied while the hair is fully saturated.
Fourth, a curl cream or styling gel layered on top of the leave-in. The gel creates a soft cast around each curl as it dries, holding the shape. Once dry, the cast can be gently scrunched out to reveal the soft, defined curl underneath.
Fifth, sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase, or use a silk bonnet. Cotton pillowcases create friction overnight that pulls moisture out of the hair and roughs up the cuticle.
That is the entire routine. It does not need 14 products. It needs five things used consistently.
Clarifying every few weeks
Because of Kuwait’s hard water, even a perfect routine will eventually start producing dull, weighted-down curls as mineral build-up accumulates on the hair shaft. A clarifying treatment every three to four weeks resets the hair. We offer this as a standalone service at Dashe because it makes such a noticeable difference.
A clarifying treatment is not a regular wash. It uses a chelating shampoo specifically designed to bind to and remove mineral deposits. The hair feels clean in a way it does not feel after a normal wash, and the curls bounce back to their proper shape immediately afterwards.
Colouring curly hair
Curly hair can be coloured beautifully, but the choice of technique matters. Bleach-heavy services like full-head highlights are harder on curly hair because the cuticle is already raised and the bleach can compromise the curl pattern. Gentler techniques (balayage, soft glazes, semi-permanent tones) work better on curls because they preserve the integrity of the strand.
If you have curly hair and you are considering a colour change, the consultation matters even more than usual. We need to look at the porosity, the elasticity, and the colour history before recommending what is safe and what will hold the curl.
Booking
Curly hair appointments at Dashe are part of our curly hair care service. The first appointment for a new curly client is always longer than a follow-up because we take the time to assess the hair, discuss the routine, and make sure we agree on the direction before any cut or treatment happens.
