Redken Acidic Bonding Concentrate Guide
Redken’s Acidic Bonding Concentrate, usually shortened to ABC, has become one of the most-recommended haircare lines in salons worldwide over the last three years. The reputation is deserved. The line solves a problem that most haircare ranges either ignore or address indirectly: maintaining the right pH level on the hair shaft to keep the cuticle smooth and the existing bonds strong.
We carry the full ABC range at Dashe Beauty in Yarmouk and we use it regularly in the salon. This is a clear explanation of what it does, what makes it different, and who should actually be using it.
The pH problem
Hair has a natural pH of around 4.5 to 5.5, which is slightly acidic. When the pH on the hair shaft stays in this range, the cuticle (the outer layer of the hair) lies flat. Flat cuticles mean smoother hair, less frizz, better shine, and less moisture loss.
The problem is that almost everything we do to hair pushes the pH up. Hard water has a higher pH. Bleach is highly alkaline. Most shampoos are slightly alkaline. Heat styling lifts the cuticle. Each of these actions, on its own, is small. Repeated daily over months and years, they add up to hair that has a constantly raised cuticle, increased porosity, and gradually accumulating damage.
ABC works by maintaining a low pH throughout the wash, condition, and leave-in steps. The cuticle stays flat, the hair stays smoother, and the existing bonds stay protected from further damage.
What’s in the line
The Acidic Bonding Concentrate range has three core products plus several extensions:
- Sulphate-Free Shampoo, the daily base wash
- Conditioner, designed to be used after the shampoo
- Leave-In Treatment, the concentrate that gives the line its name
The leave-in is the most concentrated and most active product. It is designed to be applied to towel-dried hair after the wash, before any other styling product. The shampoo and conditioner provide the daily maintenance; the leave-in provides the concentrated repair.
There are also additional products: a lightweight liquid conditioner version for fine hair, a colour-protecting variation, and a heat-protectant spray that builds on the same chemistry.
What makes it different
Most bond builders focus on rebuilding broken bonds inside the hair. ABC focuses on protecting the bonds that are still there from breaking in the first place. This is a different approach, and the practical effect is different.
A bond builder like K18 or Olaplex is more useful for repairing damage that has already happened. ABC is more useful for preventing damage from accumulating, particularly for clients who are already in a maintenance phase rather than in active recovery.
This is why we often recommend ABC alongside another bond builder rather than instead of one. The two approaches address different stages of the same problem.
Who it suits
ABC suits a wider range of hair types than most bond-builder lines. Specifically:
- Coloured hair, particularly hair that fades quickly in Kuwait’s sun
- Hair washed with hard water, which is most of Kuwait
- Hair that feels rough or dry without an obvious cause, which is often a pH problem
- Fine hair that does not tolerate heavier repair treatments
It is less essential for clients with very thick, dry, or curly hair, who often need heavier moisture-rich formulas that ABC does not provide.
How to use it correctly
The most common mistake we see is using ABC products inconsistently. The line is designed to work as a system. Using only the shampoo without the conditioner, or using the leave-in once a week instead of after every wash, dilutes the effect.
The right routine is: shampoo, condition, towel-dry, apply the leave-in, then continue with whatever styling products you normally use. The leave-in does not need to be rinsed out. It is designed to stay on the hair through the styling and drying process.
The leave-in is concentrated, so a small amount is enough. Two or three pumps for mid-length hair, four or five for longer hair. More than that does not work better and just leaves a coating on the hair.
How we use it at Dashe
ABC is part of our standard wash service for clients with coloured or chemically treated hair. We use the shampoo and conditioner during the wash, then apply the leave-in as part of the prep before styling. For clients who want to maintain the effect at home, we recommend the same routine for daily use.
It is also one of the products we suggest most often after a colour service, because the pH balancing helps the new colour stay locked in for longer.
Where to buy
The Redken Acidic Bonding Concentrate range is available at Dashe Beauty and through our Redken brand page. If you are buying ABC for the first time and you are not sure which products to start with, the simple answer is the shampoo, conditioner, and leave-in as a three-piece system. Adding the additional products (the lightweight version for fine hair, or the colour-protecting variation) makes sense once you know how the basics work for your hair.
To book a consultation or ask about the range, message us on WhatsApp at +965 66307999. Dashe Beauty is at Al Saqran Mall, Yarmouk, open Sunday through Saturday from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM.
